We had the opportunity to sit down with Elizabeth Bare, a standout pitcher for West softball. She is commanding attention on the mound, leading our softball team to new heights, and other teams are taking notice.
Q: What inspired you to start playing softball, and why did you choose to become a pitcher?
A: My mom was a big influence. She played softball throughout her childhood and was a pitcher herself. Growing up watching her play really sparked my interest, and naturally, I wanted to follow in her footsteps and take on the pitching role.
Q: How do you prepare mentally and physically before a big game or a crucial inning?
A: Preparation is key. I start with a thorough stretching routine to get my body ready. Then I work on my hitting using various drills like hitting off the tee, front toss, and even batting practice with the machine. For pitching, I practice both overhand and underhand throws to keep my arm strong and versatile. Mentally, I focus on staying calm and confident, visualizing success.
Q: What has been your most memorable moment or achievement so far while playing for West Forsyth High School?
A: Definitely making it to the playoffs last year and beating Lambert in a region doubleheader stands out as a highlight. It was such a rewarding moment for our team and really showed how hard work pays off.
Q: How do you manage to balance your academics with your softball commitments, especially during the busy season?
A: It’s all about time management. During school hours, I make sure to stay completely focused on my classes and extracurricular activities. Once the school day is over, I shift my full attention to softball practice and games. It takes discipline, but I’ve found a routine that works well for me.
Q: What goals do you have for yourself and the team this season, both on and off the field?
A: My biggest goal is to help the team make it back to the playoffs and win our first-round game. Off the field, I want us to grow stronger as a team, supporting each other and building great friendships that last beyond the season.
