It was a historic day on the oval yesterday as the West track and field team secured a third-place overall finish at the Region championships. The impressive team performance is sending a massive contingent of 27 athletes to the Sectional meet next Saturday in Carrollton.
While the team’s depth was on full display, the day will likely be remembered for a flurry of record-shattering individual and relay performances that rewrote the school’s history books.
Hurdles History
Mason Page headlined the boys’ side with a blistering performance in the 300-meter hurdles. Page crossed the finish line at 38.76 seconds, officially setting a new school record and establishing himself as a serious contender for the upcoming state qualifiers.
Drohan’s Dominance
The record-breaking trend continued with Sydney Drohan, who turned in one of the most remarkable individual efforts in recent memory. Drohan took down a 19-year-old school record in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 57.94 seconds. The previous mark had stood since 2007, making her feat a true milestone for the program.
Relay Success
Drohan wasn’t finished there. She later joined forces with Sophie Smith, Ella Cowan, and Anaya Medrano in the Girls 4×400-meter relay. The quartet displayed perfect chemistry to snap a 5-year-old school record, punctuating a day defined by speed and endurance.
